Why use lime
Before the middle of last centuary most buildings were constructed using lime as the principal binder for mortars renders and plasters. The type of material we know of as plaster and mortar are bound with either gypsum or some form of Portland cement.
It has become increasingly clear that the advances in modern materials are not necessarily beneficial for older buildings originally made using lime.Modern materials using cements and gypsum binders tend to create hard ,impervious coatings and mortars which cannot deal with movement sealing in moisture ,not allowing the walls to breath .There is a lot of opinion on these subjects ,but it seems generally accepted by most people involved with the restoration and conservation of older builds that it is preferable to use lime when it has been used in the past
That said many of the skills and knowledge about the use of traditional limes had to be re-learnt after falling out of use for the best part of 50 years.
There were few written sources and very few practitioners. However over the last 20 years a great deal of work has been carried out by organisations such as the SPAB and various Lime centres meaning that our understanding of the materials ,different limes ,aggregates and application techniques has developed I think it is important to stress that there is still a lot to be learnt and that it is important to listen and keep an open mind
